| biography:
| Criminologist and law historian, born in Poland. He taught law in Poland before coming to England, where he directed the department of criminal science at Cambridge (1946–59) and taught as professor of criminology from 1959. He wrote a major History of English Criminal Law (5 vols, 1948), and edited many works on criminal science. He was knighted in 1970. In 1991 he published The Roots of the International Association of Criminal Law. |
