| biography:
| Painter and writer on art, born in London, UK. He studied at the Euston Road School under William Coldstream, and his Impressionist style was often applied to portraits, such as Mrs Roberts (Tate, London). He was professor of fine art in the University of Durham (1948–58), Principal of Chelsea School of Art (1958–65), professor of fine art at Leeds (1967–75), and professor of fine art at University College London (1975–85). Among his books are studies of Renoir (1947) and Vermeer (1952). |
