| Writer and philosopher, born in Philippolis, C South Africa. He served with the commandos in World War 2, and was captured by the Japanese. On his return to South Africa he made several voyages of exploration to the interior. He wrote novels, but was best known for his books in the mixed genre of travel, anthropology, and metaphysical speculation. These include Venture to the Interior (1951), The Lost World of the Kalahari (1958), and The Voice of the Thunder (1993). The Seed and the Sower (1963) was filmed as Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence (1983). A volume of autobiography, The Admiral's Baby, was completed in 1996. The influence of Jung is pervasive in his work. He was knighted in 1981. |
