| Anglican missionary and ecumenist, born in Oxton, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK. Following research on religious and social conditions in South America in the 1930s, and wartime service with the ministry of information, he became president of the Church Missionary Society (1944–69), chairman of the Churches Committee on International Affairs (1946–68), and chairman of the House of Laity in the Church Assembly (1959–70). Author of several studies on South America and successive editions of the World Christian Handbook (1949–68), he revealed his waspish assessments of himself and others in A Layman Looks at the Church (1964) and his autobiography Crypts of Power (1971). |
