| biography:
| British soldier, born in India. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, and was commissioned into the Seaforth Highlanders. In World War 1 he served in France (1914–16), then fought under Allenby in Palestine (1917–18). In World War 2 he fought at Dunkirk (1940), and was commander of the 1st British Army in North Africa (1942–3), capturing Tunis (1943). He later became Governor-General of Gibraltar (1947–52). |
