biography: New Zealand statesman and prime minister (1873–5, 1876), born in London, UK. He emigrated to Australia in 1852, and became a journalist. Moving to New Zealand in 1861, he was elected to parliament (1863), and became colonial treasurer (1869) and prime minister. He is best known for the large-scale public works he initiated with the help of loans he skilfully arranged with the British government.
