| biography:
| Biologist, born in London, UK, the grandson of T H Huxley. He studied at Oxford, became professor of zoology at London (1925–7) and at the Royal Institution (1926–9), and was secretary to the Zoological Society of London (1935–42). He applied his scientific knowledge to political and social problems, formulating a pragmatic ethical theory based on the principle of natural selection. He was the first director-general of UNESCO (1946–8), and was knighted in 1958. |
