| Actor, born in London, UK. Educated at Charterhouse, he made his debut in 1874, and soon established himself as a West End favourite. In 1895, he became actor-manager of the London Lyceum, crowning his productions there with Hamlet in 1897. His later years were marked by success in The Passing of the Third Floor Back (1913). In 1900 he married Gertrude Elliot (1874–1950), a US actress who often partnered him. A daughter, Jean (1905–62), carried on the tradition, and became actress-manager in The Lady of the Camellias in 1934. |
