| biography:
| British soldier and academic. After studying at Oxford he was commissioned in the Hussars (1931). In World War 2 he served with distinction, notably with the 4th Parachute Brigade at Arnhem in 1944. He held several post-war commands, culminating in commander-in-chief, British Army of the Rhine, and of the Northern Army Group in 1966. He later became principal of King's College, University of London (1968–75). |
