| biography:
| British statesman and merchant banker, born in Bideford, Devon, SW England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, entered the House of Commmons in 1960 as Conservative member for St Ives, Cornwall, and was a junior Treasury minister in the government of Edward Heath (1972–4). In Margaret Thatcher's administration he was trade secretary (1979–81), and then defence secretary (1981–3), his period of office including the Falklands War. He left the House of Commons with a knighthood in 1983, and became chairman and chief executive of Lazard Brothers, the merchant bankers (1985–90). |
