| biography:
| Aviator, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He served as a captain in the Royal Naval Air Service in World War 1, then became a test pilot with Vickers Aircraft. On 14 June 1919, with Arthur Whitten Brown as navigator, he piloted a Vickers-Vimy biplane non-stop from St John's, Newfoundland, to Clifden, Co Galway, Ireland, in a time of 16 h 27 min. Soon afterwards Alcock was killed in an aeroplane accident in France. |
