| biography:
| Organic chemist, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied at the universities of Sydney and Oxford, and joined the staff of the Medical Research Council in 1946. He served as the director of the Milstead Laboratory of Chemical Enzymology from 1962, and in 1975 became the Royal Society research professor at Sussex University. He showed how cholesterol is synthesized in the living cell, and followed this by notable work on the stereochemistry of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, for which he shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. |
