| British actor and director. He studied at Cambridge, and first appeared on stage at the Lyric, Hammersmith (1930). His first marriage, to Inga Maria Ahlgren, was dissolved in 1946. In that year he married the actress Kay Hammond (d.1980), and they became one of Britain's most famous theatrical partnerships. From 1966 to 1973 he was director of Chichester Festival Theatre. |
