| biography:
| Physicist, born in Galway, Co Galway, W Ireland. He became a demonstrator at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, under Sir J J Thomson, before becoming professor of physics at Oxford (1900). He contributed to the theory of ionization of gases by collision, and calculated in 1897 the charge on a single gaseous ion. He was knighted in 1941. |
