| Canadian diplomat, born in Turriff, Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland, UK. He studied in Aberdeen, emigrated to Canada (1836), and was called to the Montreal bar (1842). He acquired numerous directorates, became a close political associate of John A Macdonald, and was drawn into Anglo-American arbitration in deciding Oregon-related questions (1863–9). At the same time he formed a partnership with Levi Morton in London. He played a critical part in adjusting British–American relations after the American Civil War. |
