| biography:
| Art historian, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, worked for the Victoria and Albert Museum from 1938, then held many academic and curatorial posts, including professorships of fine art at Oxford (1956–7), Cambridge (1964–5), and New York University (from 1977). He was director of the Victoria and Albert Museum (1967–73) and of the British Museum, (1974–6). A leading authority on Italian Renaissance art, his books include studies of Sienese painting and a series of authoritative volumes on Italian sculpture. He was knighted in 1971. |
