| Linguist, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, taught at London (1957–61) and Cambridge (1961–4), then became professor of linguistics at Edinburgh (1964–76) and Sussex (1976–84), and Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge (1984– ). A specialist in semantics and linguistic theory, his major publications include Semantics (2 vols, 1977), Language, Meaning and Context (1980), and Linguistic Semantics (1995). He was knighted in 1987. |
