| British soldier. From Cheltenham College he joined the Royal Marines at the age of 19 as a probationary second-lieutenant. He saw service in Britain, Brunei, and Australia in a variety of roles, including that of commandant of the Royal Military School of Music. By 1979 he had reached the rank of major-general in the commando forces, and in 1982, when the decision was taken to recapture the Falkland Is from Argentina, he was made commander of land forces.
