| biography:
| British naval officer and administrator, probably born in Chatham, Kent, SE England, UK. He served in the Navy (1796–1815), before being appointed the first governor of South Australia. The vagueness of Hindmarsh's powers led him into conflict with the resident commissioners, which set the tone for his period of office, and he was recalled to London in 1838. He was restored to favour two years later as Lieutenant-Governor of Heligoland. |
