| biography:
| English sailor, born in Plymouth, Devon, SW England, UK. He was the first Englishman to traffic in slaves (1562) between W Africa and the West Indies, but on his third expedition his fleet was destroyed by the Spanish (1567). He became navy treasurer in 1573, and was knighted for his services against the Armada in 1588. In 1595, with his kinsman Drake, he commanded an expedition to the Spanish Main, but died in Puerto Rico. |
