| biography:
| Courtier and writer, born in Kelston, Somerset, SW England, UK. From Cambridge he went to the court of his godmother, Elizabeth I. His wit brought him into much favour, which he endangered by the freedom of his satires. He is remembered as the metrical translator of Ariosto's Orlando Furioso (1591). His other writings include Rabelaisian pamphlets, epigrams, and The Metamorphosis of Ajax (1596), containing the earliest known design for a water closet, and a Tract on the Succession to the Crown. |
