| Australian statesman and judge, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Melbourne University, where he also taught, then practised at the bar and served in World War 1. From 1922 he became attorney general of the Commonwealth, Leader of the Opposition, deputy prime minister (1931–4), and Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia (1935–52). In this office he enhanced the standing of the High Court, keeping it distinct from politics, and favoured Commonwealth power against state power. |
