| British soldier, born in Lurgan, Co Armagh, SE Northern Ireland, UK. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, and served in the 2nd Boer War (1899–1902) and World War 1, in which he was promoted brigadier-general. In World War 2 he commanded I Corps in France, became Chief of the Imperial General Staff (1940–1), and was head of the British Service Mission in Washington from 1941. |
