| biography:
| Arctic explorer, born in Rochester, New Hampshire, USA. He became interested in the fate of Sir John Franklin whose 1845 expedition to the Northwest Territories, Canada, had been lost. He made two search expeditions (1860–2, 1864–9), living among the Inuits, and bringing back information and relics of the Franklin journey. In 1871 he sailed in command of the Polaris in an attempt to reach the North Pole, and via Smith's Sound made 82° 16′ N, the northernmost latitude to date. On the return journey he was taken ill, and died. |
