| Civil engineer, born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, N England, UK. From an early age he engaged in railway construction, including the London Metropolitan Railway and the original Underground in London, and Victoria Station. River improvement and dock construction also occupied his attention. He was consulting engineer to Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt (1871–9). He designed the Pimlico Railway Bridge (1860) and, with Sir Benjamin Baker, the Forth Railway Bridge (1882–90). |
