| biography:
| English statesman, born in Port Eliot, Cornwall, SW England, UK. He entered parliament in 1614, was knighted in 1618, and appointed vice-admiral of Devon in 1619. Formerly a follower of Buckingham, he broke with him in 1625, and was largely instrumental in securing his impeachment. In 1628 Eliot denounced arbitrary taxation and helped to force the Petition of Right from Charles I. After further protests against the king, he was sent with eight others to the Tower, where he was kept in confinement until his death, from consumption. |
