| Poet, born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at London and Oxford, succeeded to his father's estate, and at the outbreak of the Civil War was high sheriff of Surrey. His best-known works were the tragedy, The Sophy (1641), and his descriptive poem, Cooper's Hill (1642). At the Restoration he was appointed surveyor-general of works, and in 1661 created a Knight of the Bath. |
