| Physicist, born in Ingersoll, Ontario, SE Canada. He studied at the University of Toronto, and also at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, England. He spent most of his career at Toronto (1907–31), where he carried out research in radioactivity, spectroscopy, and low-temperature physics. In England from 1932, he investigated the use of radium to treat cancer. He was knighted in 1935. |
