| biography:
| Writer, and journalist, born in Plymouth, Devon, SW England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and became literary editor of the New Statesman (1913) and founder editor of the London Mercury (1919–34). His work is composed of light verse and parody, as in Steps to Parnassus (1913) and Tricks of the Trade (1917). He co-wrote the successful play Berkeley Square (1926) with J L Balderston, and his other works include criticisms and short stories. He was knighted in 1933. |
