| Mechanical engineer, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He rose from locomotive fireman to be chief mechanical engineer and general manager of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (1899–1919). He designed many types of locomotives and completed one of the first main-line railway electrification schemes in Britain, from Liverpool to Southport, in 1904. |
