| Physicist, born in Lancaster, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He studied at London and Cambridge, and became professor of electrical engineering at University College London (1885–1926). He invented the thermionic valve, and was a pioneer in the application of electricity to lighting and heating on a large scale. He was knighted in 1929. |
