biography: Canadian statesman and prime minister (1857–8, 1864, 1867–73, 1878–91), born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. His family emigrated in 1820, and he was educated in law at Kingston. Entering politics in 1843, he became leader of the Conservative Party, and joint premier in 1856. He was instrumental in bringing about the confederation of Canada, and in 1867 formed the first government of the new Dominion. The ‘Pacific scandal’ brought down his government in 1874, but he regained the premiership in 1878.
