| Obstetrician, born in Bathgate, West Lothian, EC Scotland, UK. He trained in Edinburgh, where he became professor of midwifery in 1840. He introduced chloroform as an anaesthetic (1847), and was the first to use it as an anaesthetic in labour. He was created a baronet in 1866. |
