| biography:
| Baroque painter, born in Melcombe Regis, Dorset, S England, UK. He executed paintings for the dome of St Paul's, Blenheim, Hampton Court, and Greenwich Hospital, and founded a drawing school, where Hogarth (who became his son-in-law) was one of his pupils. In 1718 he was made history painter to the king. Knighted in 1720, he became an MP in 1722. |
