| Social anthropologist, classicist, and folklorist, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow and at Cambridge, where he spent most of his adult life as a fellow of Trinity College. His major work was The Golden Bough (1890; rewritten in 12 vols, 1911–15). He became professor of social anthropology at Liverpool in 1907, and was knighted in 1914. |
