He was professor of engineering at Tokyo (1878–83) and Dundee (1883–90), of mechanism and applied mechanics at Cambridge (1890–1903), director of naval education (1903–16), and Principal of Edinburgh University (1916–29). He discovered and explained magnetic hysteresis (1890). |
