| biography:
| British soldier, born in Corfu, Greece. He entered the army (1873), and served with distinction in Afghanistan (1878) and the Boer Wars (1881, 1899–1901), and was knighted in 1902. In World War 1, as a general, he led the disastrous Gallipoli expedition (1915). Relieved of his command, he later became Lieutenant of the Tower (1918–20). |
