| Business executive, born in Kinlochleven, Highland, N Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow and the Royal College of Science and Technology, then developed his business career in the USA, returning in 1977 as deputy chairman of British Leyland, working with Sir Michael Edwardes. He was appointed chairman of the British Steel Corporation in 1980, and chairman of the National Coal Board (1983–6). Both industries required drastic cutbacks to survive, which he carried out despite strong trade union opposition. He was knighted in 1986. |
