biography: English navigator, the half-brother of Sir Walter Raleigh. He served in Ireland (1566–70), and was made Governor of Munster. He then campaigned in Holland (1570–5), and in 1578 led an unsuccessful colonizing expedition to the New World. In a second attempt in 1583 he landed in Newfoundland, taking possession of it for the crown, and established a colony at St John's.
