biography: Writer, born in Auckland, New Zealand. He studied at Durham and Cambridge universities, became a teacher, then an author. His many novels were very popular during his lifetime, and include The Secret City (1919), The Cathedral (1922), and the four-volume family saga, The Herries Chronicle (1930–3). He was knighted in 1937.
