| Silk merchant and philanthropist, born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, C England, UK. A mercer in London, he became sheriff (1486) and mayor (1492). At Stratford he built a stone bridge over the river, and New Place (c.1483), which was Shakespeare's home (1597–1616). |
