| biography:
| Journalist and television executive, born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, SE England, UK, the brother of Graham Greene. After studying at Oxford he worked in Germany as a foreign correspondent for the Daily Herald and later the Daily Telegraph (1934–9). In 1940 he joined the BBC to work on propaganda broadcasts to Germany, became controller of broadcasting in the British zone of Germany (1946), and rebuilt the country's peacetime radio service. He worked with the BBC's Overseas Service (1952–6), and became the BBC's first director of news and current affairs (1958–60) before being chosen as director-general (1960–9). He injected fresh vigour into the BBC, encouraging it to compete with Independent Television, and creating a liberal climate in which programme-makers flourished. |
