| Poet and art critic, born near Kirkby Moorside, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. He was an assistant keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, then professor of fine art at Edinburgh (1931–3). He held several other academic posts, and became known as a poet and a writer on aesthetics in such works as The Meaning of Art (1931) and The Philosophy of Modern Art (1946). His Collected Poems were published in 1946. He was also director of the first major British design consultancy, the Design Research Unit. He was knighted in 1953. |
