| Pharmaceutical manufacturer, born in the USA. He moved to Britain to join Silas Burroughs in a pharmaceutical business (1880), becoming sole owner when Burroughs died in 1895. He promoted the proper testing and standardization of medicines, established laboratories for research, introduced the technique of combining powders into tablets, and in his will set up the Wellcome Trust for medical research. A promoter of missionary enterprise and geographical and archaeological exploration, he became a naturalized British subject in 1910, and was knighted in 1932. |
