| Novelist and social historian, born at Bradenham Hall, Norfolk, E England, UK. Educated at Ipswich, he travelled widely in government service in South Africa, before taking up a literary life in England in 1881. The novel King Solomon's Mines (1885) immediately acquired the status of a children's classic, and was followed by She (1887) and several other stories. He wrote 58 volumes of fiction in all, and seven volumes of economic, political, and social history. He was knighted in 1912. |
