| Portrait painter, born near Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. He first produced watercolour miniatures, then worked in oils. After his marriage to a wealthy widow, he studied in Rome (1785–7), then settled in Edinburgh, where he painted the leading members of Edinburgh society in a typically bold, strongly shadowed style. He was knighted in 1822. |
