| Conductor, born in London, UK. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, became an organist, and in 1895 helped to found the Promenade Concerts which he conducted annually until his death. He composed operettas and an oratorio, but his international reputation was gained as a conductor, first at the Queen's Hall, London, then at the Albert Hall. He was knighted in 1911. |
