| Boxer, born in Bellingham, Kent, SE England, UK, the only man to win the Lonsdale Belt outright on three occasions. He beat Brian London to win his first British heavyweight title in 1959, and won his first Lonsdale Belt in 1961 when he beat Joe Erskine. After flooring Cassius Clay at Wembley in 1963, he had his only world title fight at Highbury Stadium in 1966, when a bad cut against Muhammad Ali (formerly Cassius Clay) forced his early retirement. He lost his British heavyweight title in a disputed contest against Joe Bugner in 1971, and announced his retirement. He does much work for charity, and is a popular television personality. He was knighted in 1999. |
