| Geographer, born in Resolven, Neath and Port Talbot, SC Wales, UK. He studied at Cambridge, where he lectured (1931–45) and became a fellow of King's College (1932–45, 1966–81). He was the first professor of geography at Liverpool (1945–9), and was later professor at University College London (1949–66), and at Cambridge (1966–76). A leader in promoting the relationships between geography and other subjects, he was general editor of The Domesday Geography of England (7 vols, 1952–77), and was knighted in 1988. |
