| biography:
| British soldier, born in London, UK. He trained at Sandhurst Military Academy, and in World War 1 commanded a battalion of the Irish Guards on the Western Front. He commanded 1 Corps as rearguard at the Dunkirk evacuation (1940), and was the last man to leave France. In 1942 he commanded in Burma, then became commander-in-chief Middle East (1942–3), his North African campaign being one of the most complete victories in military history. He commanded the invasions of Sicily and Italy (1943), was appointed field marshal on the capture of Rome in June 1944, and became supreme allied commander in the Mediterranean. He was later Governor-General of Canada (1946–52) and minister of defence (1952–4) in the Conservative government. |
